Memory

In my English 1A class, Professor Frankie Lennon , had the class read her memoir, The Mee Street Chronicles: Straight Up Stories of a Black Woman's Life. She had us read the first essay which is called "Memory: Mee Street and Beyond" and answer a few questions.

6. (a) What topic is the writer writing about? (c) If there is a significance of this piece-is it stated or implied?
Lennon began this chapter by giving us a little insight into her past by sharing memories of living in Knoxville as young girl. I believe her expressing her memories with full detail to us the readers is the topic of the essay. Yes the significance is that memories are part of us. They shape who we are and who we will become in the future. The significance is stated in this essay by Lennon stating at the end that memories tell a story and that they mark who you are.

7. (a) How does the author organize the piece-what modes of development are used?(b) To make the piece flow smoothly(c) Use handout or notes on transitions to identify the words or the phrases used to make transition.
Lennon I believe uses both Description and Narration to organize the paragraphs. She uses them both to give the reader a clear picture to see when describing a scene or what's around her in her neighborhood. Transition words that are used to help the paragraphs flow are: At First, In Spring, Which is why, and Back then. Transition words that are used within the paragraphs are: Unfortunately, As a result, and Eventually.

9. (a) Choose a paragraph from the essay. Pick out a word to describe the tone of voice you hear.(b)Identify one thing that the author values. (c) Identify a feeling and pick a word to describe it.
On page four the second paragraph I can hear the tone of happiness coming out through this paragraph. Happiness means when one is in the quality or state of being happy. Lennon is painting a picture for the reader to see what her house looked like, what was around it, and the different types of flowers that were growing near. By her sharing to us what was around her I was able to hear the tone of happiness. On page six the first paragraph Lennon begins to talk about her enjoyment when she reads. This passion for reading is one thing the author values. She wrote that she liked to read fairy tales because of the adventure that was in them. The beginning paragraph I sensed the feeling of loneliness from Lennon when she moved form Mee Street to Dandridge Ave. Since there was no one her age near her new house she felt alone.
