For my English 1A class, Professor Lennon has my class read a selection from Judith Cofer's memoir, A Woman in Front of the Sun: On Becoming a Writer, "Taking the Macho." After reading the selection we had to answer questions form a worksheet called Verbal or Writing Response for Open Discussions-Non-Fiction and Fiction. We had to answer five out of the seven questions and give a response. And here are my responses.
1. I like (pick something)___________ because...
I liked how Cofer began this selection because she talked about these macho women. Not only were the men shocked of meeting the women they believed there was no away a woman can be.
2. I didn't like (pick something)_________ because...
I didn't like the men in the beginning of the selection because they thought only they were "macho" and that there is no way a woman can be. I was disturbed how the women were shot at by the men and the villages were destroyed. The men seemed confused on watching the woman trying to take the man prisoner because they never seen it happen before.
3. I found(pick something)_________ interesting from a writer's point of view because...
I found Cofer's description of the macho women in the beginning interesting from a writer's point of view because she gave us the readers a clear picture on what the men saw when they came upon seeing the women. I was then able to get a better grasp about how the women were not like anything the men have seen before.
4. I found(pick something)_________ interesting from a reader's point of view because...
I found the part at the end of the selection interesting from a reader's point of view because Fernando Colon didn't believe women could have the macho in them. Even though the India wasn't considered civilized she was still able to bring out the macho in herself when it was needed.
7. I learned a couple of important things from reading this. The first was________ and I think that's important because... The second was_______ and that's important because...
I learned a couple of important things from reading this. The first was that women can be macho and I think that's important because they should be considered macho. Just because men have been looked at being the "macho" ones why can't a woman be. I believe the macho is always in a women. The second thing was women are always in control and that's important because I believe women should be considered to have power. And even though in the past women weren't given the second thought to be considered macho most women today are.
